Greek Theater

Introduction

When you think "theater," what images or objects come to mind? For some, it may be a Broadway show or a musical. For others, it may be red curtains being pulled to reveal actors on a stage. Whatever your experience, it is essential to know the origins of this art form to fully appreciate the theatrical works produced today, with some of the earliest organized theatre coming from the Ancient Greeks.

Ancient Greece

The Ancient Greeks are often attributed as the society that created the foundations of modern democracy, philosophy, and astronomy, but they also did much to bring theatre to the public. Even the word "theatre" comes from the Greek word "theatron", or "a place for viewing." The Ancient Greeks lived over 2000 years ago and were the first to create the concept of comedy and tragedy. Ancient Greeks also influenced the Romans in the dramatic arts. The Romans borrowed the Greek drama traditions and made bigger and more spectacular plays. However, both the Greek and Roman Empires had fallen by the 6th century (500s), which was welcomed in the 1000 years of the Medieval Times. You will explore Medieval theater in the next lesson.
